■Know more

More than 500 years ago, some of Hong Kong's early inhabitants built high brick walls to protect themselves from rival clans, pirates, armed thieves and wild animals. Most of them are located in the New Territories and belong to the same clan. The most famous walled villages are Kat Hing Wai (吉庆围) in Yuen Long and Tsang Tai Uk (曾大屋) in Sha Tin. Within these walls, houses are densely packed and alleys are narrow.
