◆Know more

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th president of the United States. His story inspires people to work hard despite hardship.

Since his family was not wealthy, he spent his childhood in poverty. When he was small, he helped his father on their farm. He received very little education at school but he learned a lot through books. He even self-taught himself law.

He entered politics when he was 25. After years of hard work, he was elected president when he was 51. He kept the country united during the Civil War and he freed millions of slaves.

???nglish highway:Since

''Since'' is a conjunction which connects the result with its reason. It is more formal than ''because''. It can be put at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence.

e.g. Since he did not study hard, he failed in the exam.

= He failed in the exam since he did not study hard.
