Tu Youyou(屠呦呦), born in 1930, is a renowned Chinese scientist famous for her groundbreaking discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素), a chemical that proved highly effective against malaria, a serious disease.
Despite many challenges, she found inspiration in ancient texts on Chinese medicine and conducted over 300 experiments with her team. In 1971, she eventually isolated artemisinin using modern extraction methods. The World Health Organization recommended artemisinin as the main ingredient in malaria treatments in the early 2000s, leading to its global mass production. In 2015, she became the first Chinese woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (诺贝尔生理学或医学奖).
Her work successfully integrated traditional and modern medicine, inspiring future generations and helping countless patients. Now 93, she continues to contribute as a speaker and consultant, sharing her knowledge and experience with the world.
