【明报专讯】Hong Kong faces a serious traffic congestion problem, particularly on major cross-harbor routes during peak hours. High volumes of traffic, limited land, and constant construction exacerbate bottlenecks in areas like Central, Causeway Bay, and the tunnels linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Public transport is heavily relied upon, yet road usage remains heavy due to commercial activities and private cars.

Ways to alleviate traffic congestion in Hong Kong

Apart from building transportation infrastructure such as highways and bypasses like the Central―Kowloon Bypass, the Hong Kong government has adopted several other methods to alleviate traffic congestion.

Public Transport Fare

Subsidy Scheme

The government introduced the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme in 2019 to relieve the fare burden on commuters who travel on local public transport services. On 1 June 2025, the monthly threshold under the Scheme was raised from $400 to $500.
