Cyberbullying happens when someone uses digital devices to say mean or hurtful things to another person, to embarrass them or make them feel bad. It can happen on social media, online forums, in messages or games. Unlike traditional bullying, which usually happens in person, cyberbullying can take place anytime and anywhere. As most children and teenagers use the Internet and social media, the chances of cyberbullying go far beyond the playground.
Cyberbullying can cause serious harm. Victims may feel anxious, lonely, lose confidence or even become depressed. To create a safe online environment, always be kind, think before you post and tell a trusted adult if you or someone else is being cyberbullied.
Sometimes people post jokes, comments or photos without meaning to hurt, but if those actions embarrass or upset someone online it can still be considered a form of cyberbullying. That is why it is important to think before you post online because even a joke can hurt someone once it is shared.
